Unity has its roots in Christianity. The thing that sets us apart from other Christian religious groups, however, is that we practice METAPHYSICS. Charles Fillmore, Unity co-founder, dedicated his life to the study of metaphysics and created a significant body of work applying it to the Bible and our lives.
Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that addresses knowing and being. Metaphysics explores beyond the literal, or the physical. It uses etymology, history, physical knowledge, symbology, and a little psychology, among other tools to explain the nature of life.
In metaphysics, for example, we would say a mountain is more than a physical elevation; it is a elevated state of awareness. A garden, quite literally, is a place where plants grow. Metaphysically, a garden is the spiritual body that brings forth thoughts. In life, we quite literally experience mistaken judgment. Metaphysically, we experience opportunities for greater understanding.
When I began to study metaphysics, I experienced a quickening. Mr. Fillmore described a quickening as an inflow of divine vitality. Indeed it is! Metaphysics might answer every question you’ve ever asked about who you really are, why you’re here, where you’re going after here, what God is and was Jesus actually the only son of God.
